The collaboration with Poland began with the planning and implementation of a pilot study in 1980-81. A baseline survey screened over 5,000 men and women aged 35-64 in Warsaw and Cracow in 1983-84. A second survey was done in 1987-88 with the second screen also containing a rescreen of 25 percent of the initial survey. A third survey began in 1992 and continued through 1994. Mortality follow-up and community surveillance for CVD in the populations sampled remains as an ongoing activity.
