Collaboration with the PRC began in 1981 with the pilot study. The baseline surveys were in 1983-84 in four populations of men and women aged 35-54 in Beijing urban, Beijing rural, Guangzhou urban, and Guangzhou rural. Over 10,000 participants were screened in this baseline survey. The rescreen of these 10,0000 people was completed in 1987-88 and a mortality follow-up is currently underway. A second rescreen began in 1993 and was completed in 1994, with mortality follow-up ongoing annually. For both the baseline and rescreen surveys, a subsample of 10% were screened for dietary intake and urinary electrolytes.
